It was mushroom season when I arrived at a men’s retreat in North Yorkshire. Twelve men had come together to spend three days living in pared-back, communal accommodation in remote pine forests, to re-engage with themselves, each other and nature and reframe what masculinity meant to them.
This growing community called Both Sides was founded by an ex professional rugby player called Anthony after observing unhealthy behaviours in himself and others: “We are trying to rebuild our perceptions of what it means to be a good man, an integral man, in the modern day. And how we can be of service to the people we love and those around us.”
The community brings men together to share personal stories around fire circles, learn breathwork for emotional release, strengthen physical relationship through jiu-jitsu and build resilience through wild swimming and sauna.
This work was made on commission with BBC Sport.
